Overall, I’m an impatient person. I use to just say that I was efficient–which is true. In fact, at times I’m efficient to a fault. I like to get things down the quickest and most effective way possible. I usually can find a better way to do just about any project or handle situations. And so this makes me impatient, as well.
But patiently and persistently, my husband and I have prayed. Specifically we have prayed about several things–sometimes for years. God hasn’t always answered my prayers the way I anticipated–in fact, quite in-efficiently if you ask me.
Once while we lived in Texas Michael and I were praying to move into a house. We didn’t have the means, but it was a necessary situation for our family and our marriage. We prayed, we prayed, we had others pray with us. A precious partner in ministry approached us saying God told her to help us, we just needed to name the price. I prayed and God told me an OUTRAGEOUS amount of money, to which I laughed—muahhhhhaaaa God, I’m not asking for THAT! A week later, I got a card with a check with that exact amount of money. It allowed us to move on, and move closer to Christ, to strengthen our marriage. God answered.
Michael and I will celebrate our 9th anniversary this year. We knew from the beginning of our relationship that we wanted to be in Florida, and that was where God wanted us to raise our kids. We prayed, we were slapped in the face, we turned the other cheek, just to get slapped again a few years later. It took us 5 years of prayer for God to move us here. God answered.
I prayed for this one house in Florida that Michael was looking at. It seemed the perfect size and the perfect situation. Michael went back to make an offer. The house was gone. God answered.
Michael and I have prayed and prayed for a car. We have been a one car family since before his deployment. It has been difficult and frustrating. We have not had the means to purchase one, nor can we afford a payment. With every coordination of schedule and change in shift hours, we knew that our family needed a car for me to be able to accomplish what I needed to as a mom and in ministry.
A few weeks ago, we had friends call us. They had a car. They wanted to gift it to us. No, really! I have friends who gave us a car. Just, “Here, you can have it.” I know, I was shocked, too. Two years of prayer. God answered. In the most unexpected way.
We still have open-ended prayer requests. Like all of those crazy dramatic shows that you don’t want to have to wait one more week to find out what happens next. That’s what our prayer requests are like. Full of anticipation, anxiety, a little frustration…but also excitement to see what God is going to do.
We have things we have prayed about for 9 years, still no definitive answer. But we are still pressing on, knowing that God will provide in one way or another.
So be encouraged, don’t give up. Your marriage, your kids, your finances. Your addiction, your self-hatred, your future. Keep praying and pressing into HIM. It’s not always easy–it’s truly long-suffering. But God shows up. God answers.
