Growing in Patience

I have a good friend Tiffany.  She’s a real person, not an alter ego that I named after myself because I’m so insanely vain.  Really! She exists!  She felt sorry for Zac and his God-given desire to work the land, like our long-lost relative Adam.  So she gave me beans ….

Zac was thrilled to get beans!  He put it in a baggie, added a little condensation and carefully placed it on the porch to keep it warm.  Now we are just waiting…

and waiting…

and waiting…

and waiting…

Yah, I know it’s only been 24 hours.  But we are still

I realize now why I never planted a garden.  I don’t like to wait.  Even if I plant flowers, I buy the ones already bloomed.  The seeds just take too long.  And you never know what will happen.  You can dig and till and plant them exactly 1 and 3/4 of an inch apart.  Water regularly, pray over them, talk to them, sing to them and maybe just maybe they won’t grow.

I gladly live in the world of instant gratification.  I have no doubt I was born in the correct era–Yay God, you know what you’re doing! But not everything happens immediately, especially a relationship with Jesus.

Not getting what you want out of your relationship with Jesus?  Does it seem like you’ve done everything right?  You’ve planted, tilled and even watered your relationship with Christ? And you’re still just waiting.

Don’t fear sweet friend! God has not abandoned you.  In fact, even while you can’t see it, he’s growing and changing and transforming you, just like that seed under the earth.  He makes some promises to you:

Isaiah 55:11  so is my word that goes out from my mouth:  It will not return to me empty   [ nothing that God plants just doesn’t grow.]

Romans 2:4  Or do you show contempt for the riches of his kindness, forbearance and patience, not realizing that God’s kindness is intended to lead you to repentance? [sometimes God’s requirement for patience is really HIS patience working in you to bring you to a place of turning away from the sins and bondage you are in so that you can be closer to Him]

Colossians 1:10-12 so that you may live a life worthy of the Lord and please him in every way: bearing fruit in every good work, growing in the knowledge of God, 11 being strengthened with all power according to his glorious might so that you may have great endurance and patience, 12 and giving joyful thanks to the Father, who has qualified you to share in the inheritance of his holy people in the kingdom of light. [your patience will strengthen you, helping you to bear the fruit of good work for the kingdom of God.]

What area of your life are you needing more patience right now?  I’d love to pray for you.
