Photosynthesis. Wait! Don’t leave. Bear with me. I just wanted to get the ugly word out there, up front, real–it’s on the table. In 7th grade the “P” word was something I had to know for a test grade in Ms. Tietze’s Science class that was worth 30% of my grade, but now it holds a much different weight.
Photosynthesis is the process in which trees absorb sunlight and air and turn it into food they store for future survival. Isn’t that amazing? I think so. God is so intricate, providing every need for a simple, tree or plant. Not only does every leaf have a purpose, but every part of every leaf has a purpose.
The underside of the leaf is where the tree absorbs air. A tree takes a breath–inhales, inspires, draws in the very air it needs for survival. It needs air, as do we. We need air for our physical body and breath for our spiritual. The breath of God allows our own spiritual photosynthesis, we only must breath Him in.
Out of all the ways God could have chosen to start humanity, he chose to breathe his life into ours.
And the Lord God formed man of the dust of the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and man became a living being. Genesis 2:7
It was God breathing the Holy Spirit into Adam that made him alive. Like Adam, we need to be made alive by the breath of God. We need to breathe in the Holy Spirit to our human spirit. God is our air. I LOVE to see newborn babies restfully laying on their backs, peaceful and breathing. Their little bellies moving up and down in a perfect rhythm, their breath from the depths of Jesus sustaining them, living in them. Acknowledge God as the reason you are alive. Just take His Breath
Job, in his distress from a life taken from him, wounds inflicted upon on him, and a h0pe barely remaining in him, rested in the truth that God had all power of life. He says:
The Spirit of God as made me, And the breath of the Almighty gives me life. Job 33:4
Not just physical life, but the soul within Job, within you, needs the breath of the Almighty to give new life–a life filled with the Spirit, who can and will allow rest in your weariness. The Spirit who can and will give you the encouragement to move forward into the new year, regardless of what the year past has held. The Spirit who can and will give you a hope a purpose, a calling. The Spirit who can and will love you relentlessly, and unconditionally in a way that you have never experienced. Just take His breath.
It’s yours, he wants to give it to you:
So Jesus said to them again, “Peace to you! As the Father has sent Me, I also send you.” And when He had said this, He breathed on them, and said to them, “Receive the Holy Spirit . John 20:21-22
Jesus is the air in your lungs, the breath in your soul. As he breathes on you, Receive the Holy Spirit. Allow it to live in you, giving you the empowerment to do His work. Giving you the peace to rest your spirit. Giving you the love to sustain your life. Take HIS breath.
